Roman Provincial, Asia Minor, Uncertain Mint, Augustus, AE AS (bronze, 7.24g, 24mm), 27 BC – 14 AD
Obv: [CAESAR]; Bare head of Augustus to right
Rev: AVGVSTVS; within laurel wreath
Ref:Ā  BMC 731; RPC I 2235 Rarity/Choice: Common, aVF (smoothened, somewhat porous, otherwise, nice green-olive patina)
Note: Augustus established the Roman Empire after a period of internal strife and civil wars. His reign marked the beginning of the Pax Romana, a long period of relative peace and stability across the empire. By presenting himself as a strong and capable leader, Augustus sought to legitimize his rule and gain the loyalty of the provinces.Ā  The obverse features a bare head of Augustus facing right. The absence of a crown or other adornments signifies Augustus’ desire to project an image of simplicity and humility, aligning with his portrayal as the ‘first among equals’ rather than a monarch. The reverse shows the inscription “AVGVSTVS” within a laurel wreath. The laurel wreath is a classical symbol of victory and honor, signifying Augustus’ military successes and his role in bringing peace and stability to the Roman Empire.
