Note: Caracalla was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 198 to 217. His reign spanned the territories of Britannia, Gaul, Hispania, and Africa. This period was characterized by significant military campaigns, including the expansion and defense of the empire’s borders, as well as internal and external political challenges. The obverse features the laureate head of Caracalla facing right. The laurel wreath signifies his imperial authority and accomplishments. “ANTONINVS PIVS AVG” – This stands for “Antoninus Pius Augustus,” indicating Caracalla’s use of the name Antoninus Pius to evoke the Antonine dynasty’s legacy, to honor his adoptive name, and emphasize his status as emperor. The reverse shows Hercules standing left, holding a branch, a club, and wearing a lion’s skin. Hercules is depicted as a symbol of strength and valor, reflecting the emperor’s association with heroic attributes. “P M TR P XV COS III P P” – This translates to “Pontifex Maximus, holding tribunician power for the fifteenth time, consul for the third time, and Father of the Fatherland.” This inscription highlights his various roles and honors.
