Note: Anazarbus was an ancient city in the region of Cilicia, producing coins that reflected local traditions and the influence of the Roman Empire. The pseudo-autonomous issue indicates that the coin was minted by the city itself rather than directly under the authority of a Roman emperor, often showcasing local deities and symbols. The city of Anazarbus, located in Cilicia, enjoyed a degree of autonomy and cultural expression under the broader umbrella of the Roman Empire. The local coinage often depicted deities and symbols significant to the city’s identity and heritage. During this period, the Roman Empire maintained a stable presence in the region, allowing local traditions to flourish alongside Roman administrative control. The obverse features a veiled and draped bust of Demeter facing right, with two grain ears and a poppy before her. Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, is depicted with symbols representing fertility and harvest.Ā  “KAICAP Ī P ANAZAP” refers to the city of Anazarbus under the nominal authority of the Roman Emperor (Caesar). The reverse shows another veiled and draped bust of Demeter facing right, wearing a polos (a high cylindrical crown) and with a burning torch before her. The torch symbolizes the guiding light and search, associated with the myth of Demeter searching for her daughter Persephone.
