Note: Kelenderis was an ancient city located in the region of Cilicia, which is situated in modern-day Turkey. Cilicia was known for its strategic location between Asia Minor and the Levant, making it an important center for trade and commerce throughout antiquity.  Tyche, the Greek goddess of fortune and prosperity, is depicted wearing a turreted crown, symbolizing the city’s walls, a diadem (a royal headband), and a draped garment. This representation signifies the protective and nurturing aspect of Tyche over the city. Apollo, the Greek god of music, prophecy, and healing, is portrayed standing left. He holds a branch, possibly representing laurel, and leans on a column topped with a lyre, a stringed musical instrument associated with Apollo. This imagery emphasizes Apollo’s role as a patron of the arts and music. This coin’s imagery highlights the cultural and religious significance of Kelenderis. The depiction of Tyche on the obverse suggests the city’s reliance on luck and protection, while the representation of Apollo on the reverse emphasizes artistic and cultural aspects.
