Note: Soloi-Pompeiopolis was an ancient city located in the region of Cilicia, situated in modern-day Turkey. It was a significant urban center during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The city was known for its strategic location along trade routes, its thriving economy, and its rich cultural and religious life. On the obverse side, Athena symbolizes the city’s association with the Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare, and crafts. She was a significant figure in Greek mythology and a common motif on coins of this era. On the reverse side, Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, fertility, and ecstasy, is depicted standing left. He holds a kantharos (a drinking cup commonly used for wine) in one hand and a thyrsos (a staff topped with a pine cone) in the other, attributes closely associated with his worship and rituals. In addition to the Owl depicted on the left side, it symbolizes wisdom, knowledge, and foresight. It was associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and often depicted on coins, representing the city of Athens. Owls were also believed to have prophetic abilities, making them a revered symbol of intellect and insight.
