Note: Maximianus, also known as Maximian, was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 286 to 305 during the Tetrarchy, a system of joint rule established by Diocletian. He was appointed as Caesar in AD 285 and elevated to Augustus in AD 286. Maximian’s rule primarily covered the western provinces of the Roman Empire. His reign was marked by military campaigns to defend and secure the empire’s borders and by efforts to stabilize the internal administration. The tetradrachm of Maximianus from Alexandria is a notable example of Roman provincial coinage. The obverse, featuring a detailed bust of the emperor, underscores his military and divine authority. The reverse, depicting Homonoia with cornucopiae and a star, conveys themes of unity and prosperity, essential for maintaining stability in the empire. This coin not only facilitated economic transactions but also reinforced the emperor’s image and the values of the Tetrarchic system.
