Note: Gallienus was a Roman Emperor who ruled during a tumultuous period known as the Crisis of the Third Century. His reign was marked by constant military conflicts, economic instability, and the fragmentation of the Roman Empire. During Gallienus’s reign, the Roman Empire was besieged by external invasions, internal rebellions, and economic difficulties. The emperor sought to consolidate his power by emphasizing his divine favor and protection from the gods, particularly Diana, a goddess associated with the hunt and the moon. Gallienus co-ruled with his father, Valerian, until the latter’s capture by the Persians in 260, after which Gallienus ruled alone until his assassination in 268 AD. The obverse features a radiate head of Gallienus facing right, symbolizing his divine association with the sun god Sol, a common motif during this period.Ā  The reverse shows a stag walking left, an animal sacred to Diana, symbolizing the emperor’s reliance on the goddess for protection and favor.
