Note: This Follis depicts Heraclius alongside his young son Heraclius Constantine, reflecting the emperor’s early efforts to establish a secure dynasty amid crisis. Heraclius came to power after overthrowing the tyrant Phocas and immediately faced the massive Persian offensive that overran much of the eastern provinces. Despite these setbacks, his reign would later be marked by brilliant counteroffensives and the eventual recovery of the True Cross from Persia. The Nicomedia mint played an important role in producing bronze currency for Asia Minor, and this early issue underscores both the political importance of dynastic continuity and the financial strain of an empire fighting for survival.
