Note: The Lykian League was an ancient federation of cities in the region of Lycia, located in southwestern Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). The League emerged during the Hellenistic period, around the 2nd century BC, and continued to exist until it was incorporated into the Roman province of Asia in 43 AD. Kragos, was one of the cities that comprised the Lykian League. It was situated in the eastern part of Lycia, near the border with Pamphylia. Like other cities in the League, Karagos played a role in the governance and administration of the federation. Apollo was a significant deity in Greek and Roman mythology, associated with music, prophecy, healing, and the sun. A kithara is a type of lyre or stringed musical instrument commonly associated with Apollo, who was often depicted playing it. The presence of the kithara emphasizes Apollo’s association with music and the arts. The overall design of the coin reflects the cultural and religious significance of Apollo in the region, as well as the importance of music and the arts in ancient Greek society. The use of Apollo’s image on the coin also suggests a connection to the wider Hellenistic cultural world, which influenced the artistic and religious practices of the Lykian League.
