Note: Sidon, one of the major Phoenician cities, along with Tyre and Byblos, was situated on the coast in modern-day Lebanon, serving as a significant port and trade center, famous for its glass and purple dye production. The “Uncertain King” refers to the ruler of Phoenicia during the coin’s minting, approximately between 435-425 BC, a time marked by political instability and power struggles among various cities and rulers. The depiction of a Phoenician galley sailing left, with waves below, reflects Phoenicia’s maritime culture and proficiency in sailing and trade. On the reverse, a Persian king or hero is shown in a kneeling-running stance, facing right, and drawing a bow, typical of Persian art, symbolizing the authority and military prowess of the Persian king. The figure is within an incuse square, indicating that it’s indented into the surface of the coin.
