Note: During the time of the Severan dynasty, the Roman Empire experienced a mix of military expansion, economic prosperity, and political intrigue. Local cities like Amorium in Phrygia often issued coins that emphasized their unique identities and loyalty to the empire, even though these coins were not directly issued by the emperors themselves. The obverse features a laureate, veiled, and draped bust of the Boulé facing right. The laureate wreath signifies honor and authority, the veil represents solemnity and respect, and the drapery denotes status and dignity. This imagery emphasizes the importance and reverence of the local council in Amorium’s civic life. The reverse shows the river-god Knepeleos reclining to the left, holding a reed in his right hand and leaning on an urn from which water flows. The reed and flowing water symbolize the river’s significance to the city’s prosperity and life. The depiction of Knepeleos highlights the natural resources and geographical features important to Amorium.
