Note: Antiochos IX Eusebes Philopator, also known as Antiochus IX Cyzicenus, was a ruler of the Seleucid Empire, one of the successor states to Alexander the Great’s empire. He reigned during a period of significant instability in the Seleucid Empire, late the 2nd century BC. The epithet “Eusebes Philopator” translates to “Pious Father-Loving.” It was common for Hellenistic rulers to adopt such epithets to reinforce their legitimacy and the loyalty of their subjects. Antiochus IX Cyzicenus is also associated with coinage, as many rulers of the time were. Seleucid coinage often featured the ruler’s portrait, along with symbols of power and authority. Coins minted during his reign serve as important historical artifacts, providing insights into the politics, economy, and art of the period.
