Note:  The Seleucid Empire was a vast Hellenistic state that existed in the Near East after the death of Alexander the Great. Antiochos VIII Epiphanes, also known as Grypos, was one of the kings of this empire. He ruled from Antioch on the Orontes, which was a major city and one of the Seleucid Empire’s most important centers. Depicting an eagle on coins often symbolizes power, authority, and sovereignty.
