Note: Augustus, born Gaius Octavius, was the founder of the Roman Empire and its first Emperor, ruling from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. He established a period of relative peace known as the Pax Romana and implemented numerous reforms that stabilized and expanded the empire. His reign included the provinces of the Roman Empire, including Syria and the region of Seleucis and Pieria. The ‘Semis’ of Augustus, minted in Antioch, is a notable artifact from the early Roman Empire. The obverse, featuring a laureate head of Augustus, highlights his status as a revered and victorious leader. The reverse, with the “S•C” within a wreath, signifies the Senate’s approval and the legitimacy of his authority. This coin not only facilitated economic transactions but also served as a medium to disseminate Augustus’ image and reinforce his rule across the empire.
