Note: Valerian I was a Roman emperor who ruled from 253 to 260 AD. His rule included the provinces of the Roman Empire during a period of severe crisis known as the Crisis of the Third Century, which was marked by political instability, economic decline, and frequent invasions by barbarian tribes.Ā  The obverse features a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valerian I facing right. The radiate crown signifies his status as emperor and is associated with the sun god Sol, symbolizing divine favor. The drapery and cuirass (a type of armor) highlight his role as both a leader and a military commander. The reverse shows a female figure representing the Orient, turreted (wearing a mural crown symbolizing city walls), standing to the right and presenting a wreath to the Emperor standing to the left and holding a spear. The female figure signifies the personification of the eastern provinces, acknowledging Valerian I’s efforts in defending and restoring them. The wreath symbolizes victory and honor, while the spear represents military power.
