Note: Arcadius was a Roman emperor who ruled from 383 to 408 AD. He was the eldest son of Theodosius I and became co-emperor with his brother Honorius. His reign was marked by the continued division of the empire and significant challenges including military threats and internal instability. The obverse features a pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Arcadius facing right. The diadem signifies his imperial authority, the drapery indicates his role as a leader, and the cuirass (armor) reflects his military role. The reverse depicts Arcadius standing facing, his head turned to the right. He holds a spear and a shield, symbols of his military leadership. To the right, Nike, the personification of Victory, advances to the left to crown Arcadius. Nike’s presence and the act of crowning represent divine favor and the emperor’s victorious achievements.
