Note: Marcus Aurelius was a Roman Emperor who ruled from AD 161 to 180. His reign is often remembered as the last period of the Pax Romana, a time of relative peace and stability across the Roman Empire. However, it was also marked by military conflicts on the borders and internal strife. Marcus Aurelius was a Stoic philosopher and is known for his work Meditations. The city of Cyrrhus, like many other provincial cities, continued to express its identity and allegiance to the emperor through coinage. The obverse features a laureate head of Marcus Aurelius facing right. The laurel wreath symbolizes his authority and victory, reinforcing his role as a strong and wise ruler. The reverse shows Zeus Kataibates seated to the left on a rock, holding a thunderbolt over an eagle at his feet and a long scepter. The thunderbolt signifies Zeus’s power and authority, while the eagle is a traditional symbol of his divine presence. The scepter represents his role as the king of the gods.
