Note: Phocas was a Byzantine Emperor who ruled from 602 to 610 AD. His reign was marked by violence and turmoil, as he seized power through a coup, overthrowing Emperor Maurice. Phocas faced internal conflicts with the Orthodox Church and external threats from the Persians and Slavs. Despite his efforts to maintain control, his oppressive rule led to widespread unrest, contributing to the decline of the Byzantine Empire. He is remembered as a controversial figure in Byzantine history, known for his authoritarian methods and eventual downfall.  The inscription “D N FOCAS PЄRP AVG” abbreviates to “Dominus Noster Phocas Perpetuus Augustus,” meaning “Our Lord Phocas, Perpetual Emperor.” This highlights Phocas’ imperial status and perpetuity of his rule. Despite his violent rise to power and controversial rule, Phocas left a lasting legacy in Byzantine history, influencing subsequent events and rulers.
